SLS en SLES versus natuurlijke sulfaten
It is is important to note that, before you evaluate a particular ingredient, it is better to assess a complete formula instead of one single ingredient in isolation. It is the combination of ingredients that give a certain result.
SLS and SLES are sulfates and sulfates are highly efficient cleaning agents. This kind of surface active ingredients are anionic, which means that they are negatively charged. They are strong cleaners effectively remove the dirt, especially oil from all kinds of surfaces. The negative charge is what makes sulfates very effective to bind with oil. In general, all anionic surface-active substances are considered to be "aggressive".
What is meant by '' aggressive ''?
When we shampoo the hair or wash skin, we want the greasy dirt layer removed. But directly underneath this layer is the scalp or skin's own protective layer of natural skin and scalp oils. When the hair and skin are cleaned aggressively, this protective layer is removed and the scalp or skin is more vulnerable. A more vulnerable skin is dry or even irritated and will feel very dry or produce more oil to protect itself and therefor your hair might be easily greasy while you keep shampooing it. This is why it is important to search for a mild Shampoo to balance the protective layer of the scalp and skin.
None of THE SOAPPHARMACY products contain SLS and SLES.
It is important to understand that not all sulfates are the same. SLS and SLES are relatively aggressive sulfates. The SLS and SLES molecules are very small and these small molecules penetrate the first layer of skin and can irritate the scalp.
THE SOAPPHARMACY works with natural sulfates and oil with cleansing benefits in the Shampoo. These natural sulfates are lage- size molecules that are less aggresive and irritate the scalp much less. We use these sulfates in combination with a rich formula of a cleansing oil and moisturizing, nourishing and voluminzing ingredients to really care for the scalp and hair.
Alternatives for sulfates are alcohol, certain oils and soap. Each alternative has advantages and disadvantages. Some alternatives to natural sulphates have more disadvantages than the natural sulphates, which is why we opted for natural sulfates in the Shampoo.
A number of sulfate-free shampoos that are on the market, have replaced sulfates with alcohol. However, alcohol without the addition of compensatory caring ingredients, processed directly in a shampoo, has a drying effect on skin and hair. The same is true for shampoos that clean on the basis of soap, which can lead to gray precipitate on the hair so that the shine disappears and in many cases it will irritation the skin due to a too high pH-value.
These shampoos are sulfate-free, but they are no improvement for the hair and scalp!
